Undergraduate or Graduate Intern

Thank you for your interest in an internship with NCTE. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, regrettably, we will not be able to accommodate any interns during the summer of 2020.  As we get closer to the fall, we will reassess the situation in light of the recommendations from the Center for Disease Control, the District of Columbia Health Department and other public health officials. We will update our website with fall internship information as soon as we can.

NCTE accepts rolling applications for Fall, Spring and Summer internships for undergraduate and graduate students. Law students see Legal Internships/Fellowships. Undergraduate and graduate interns will gain experience in all aspects of non-profit advocacy work by supporting projects in each department of the organization. However, NCTE will make every effort to take applicant preferences and interests, such as policy, racial and economic justice, communications, or development, into account when assigning supervision and tasks.

Internships have flexible start and end dates. While internships are typically unpaid during the school year, during the summer NCTE offers a stipend to assist with living expenses in DC. NCTE can also work with a student's university to assure academic credit is received (if eligible for credit).

Interns may have an opportunity to work on the types of work listed below, based on the needs of the organization and the interest of the applicant:

  • Provide research and analysis on current policy issues
  • Tracking data, such as local and federal policies
  • Support efforts to educate policymakers and key stakeholders
  • Attend hearings, coalitional meetings, and community events
  • Research and write blog posts and public education materials on social and policy issues that impact transgender people
  • Draft and edit press releases and media advisories
  • Assist with coordination, logistics, or outreach for events such as press conferences or fundraisers
  • Maintain development systems including individual donor tracking, grant calendar, and event calendar
  • Assist with individual donor research and correspondence
  • Turn NCTE’s policy work into compelling stories to use in development or public education materials
  • Connect transgender people with critical resources by researching and responding to inquiries from the general public

All undergraduate and graduate interns will be expected to assist with the day to day operation of the organization including, but not limited to, drafting correspondence, answering phones, event logistics, and other duties as assigned. However, NCTE is committed to ensuring that all interns have an exceptional learning experience with real hands on organizational work. Administrative functions are limited to a small part of the intern experience, and are connected with useful career skills as often as possible.
