Working and Applying to Work for NCTE

Diversity and Racial Justice

The National Center for Transgender Equality affirmatively values diversity and seeks to hire and retain staff that reflects the diversity of our communities.

NCTE is in the midst of total transformation as we realign our organization toward racial justice, inside and out. We strive to create an environment where all employees know they are valued. In particular, we work to address anti-Black racism as it greatly impacts our ourganization and our community. At NCTE, we work to address racism whether it is coming from the inside or from outside and whether it is manifesting on personal or systemic levels. We continuously challenge ourselves to understand and address inequities and are committed to the learning process, both personal and professional. As a social justice organization, we will only succeed in creating a just and equitable society for all trans people if we focus our work on the needs of the most marginalized trans people, especially trans people of color. We are deeply committed to transformation and invite our community to hold us accountable in this crucial work.

For more details on NCTE's racial and social justice journey, see Justicia racial en NCTE.

Who should apply to work at NCTE?

  • We are committed to creating a diverse staff made of people who are kind, optimistic, talented and committed to social justice.
  • You don’t need to have experience as a “trans activist.” While being an “activist” of any kind is great and relevant, so is working or volunteering to serve the trans community, or other communities, in many other ways, whether that is through a service group, a community group, or in another kind of way. People coming from the for-profit world are also welcome. Just be sure to tell us how your life experience translates to what we need in the position we are hiring for.
  • For most jobs, there is an applicant pool of people from across the country. NCTE can assist with relocation expenses for candidates who are offered the position. Please don’t let the cost of moving stop you from applying. Note: During the COVID-19 crisis, the health of our community is important. We anticipate hiring with only phone and video chat interviews during this time. And, for positions that are based in DC, we understand that final candidates will not move to DC until it is safe to do so.

What should I expect during the hiring process?

  • After reviewing applications, those who advance will be invited to do a short, 30-minute phone interview. Those who go to the next round can expect a video interview.
  • NCTE has improved its hiring systems and now strives for the hiring process to be complete within 8 weeks of the initial posting of an open position. Because people apply from all over the country, sometimes 8 weeks is not achievable given the need for travel. Note: During the time of COVID-19, there may be unforeseen delays; though we will keep applicants informed if there are delays.
  • NCTE provides reasonable accommodations for the application, interview, or any other aspects of the employee selection process to applicants with disabilities. Please contact us via our confidential medical email at GME@dhr-rgv.com so your request can be handled appropriately and confidentially.

Salary Philosophy

NCTE has always striven to set salaries and wages to ensure that all permanent and temporary staff receive a living wage, regardless of the position. For several years, the starting salary for all full-time positions has been a minimum of $50,000. Positions are paid competitively with DC-area social justice non-profit salaries. We have chosen to set salaries/salary ranges based on these factors: competitive/market rates for the position, the years of relevant experience a person has, and an analysis of salaries conducted by outside experts. All staff receive a COLA (cost of living adjustment) raise annually, absent unusual circumstances, with the potential for merit-based raises for exceptional performance. The organization reviews salaries annually. We therefore limit individual salary and raise negotiations because social scientists have shown that these are not equitable processes, with those with more privilege being generally more assertive about asking for higher salaries and for raises.
